                     Chapter Six

That night at home Julie looked deep into my eyes. ''I heard from
Mike that you killed one of those things.'' She said her face twisted
not knowing weather to be proud or mad.
“Jules,” I said taking a long slow draw off my cigarette. ''I'm not
trying to be some one's hero. These...these sharks or whatever
they are.'' I hesitated a moment choosing my words carefully. ''Well
they're just not...well honey someone's got to stop them.”
''I know you're doing the right thing.'' She said. Her words not
saying the same thing her face was. ''I'm just scared that’s all.''
Drawing her close loving the feel of her warm soft body I kissed her
tenderly and said. ''I've seen the shark's eyes, and ever since, I
don't know why, but this has become my fight.'' I watched her
expression change and hoped that she understood. She knew what
happened to Chris. And after I was attacked I had every right to
want revenge. But it was more than that, much more... When I
looked into the creature’s eyes I saw something dark, something
evil, and I just knew that kind of thing absolutely could not be
allowed to live in our world.
Julie pulled me close to her and held me like that for a long
moment. When she pulled away, her face was wet with tears. ''You
do what you have to do Rick, but I'm not going to stay here and
watch you get yourself killed.'' After she said it, she went upstairs
to pack her clothes.
"It will all be over soon.'' I told her as she got in her car and drove
away.
A short while later Mike called and said he and Sheriff Johnson
were coming over. As I waited, I stared at the shimmering water in
the canal and wondered how something so beautiful, could contain
such evil.

Zeus surfaced about a quarter mile away and watched the man
standing on the porch. He knew this was the same man that had
killed Thunder. He also knew what boat it was; Zeus could have
easily destroyed the boat, but knew the man he wanted was not on
board. He quietly submerged and headed out to sea hoping he
would see this man again.
“Come on in.” I said to Mike and the Sheriff as they walked up to the
door.
“Rick,'' Sheriff Johnson said as he entered my house.'' I think you
two saved a lot of lives today.''  Then he smiled and added. ''That's
why I'm not going to lock you up for that stunt you pulled this
morning.”
I knew he was kidding but I wasn't in the mood for jokes. ''Can you
get to the point?''
Sheriff Johnson's eyes grew cold, ''We found two more bodies out
by the lighthouse. One of them was Jeff Davis. We're not sure about
the other one.” The Sheriff's face was perspiring, even though the
air conditioning was working fine. ''There wasn't enough to identify.''
I wanted to scream. I hated these God damned sharks. Looking at
Mike I said, ''How many people are going to die?" I wanted an
answer but Mike didn't have one.
''Rick the National Guard will be here tomorrow. This has gotten out
of hand...I called them today.” The Sheriff was telling me this as if
trying to convince me. ''The coast guard is also sending two cutters
and a chopper.”
''Great...!  I wish them well.” I said it not at all sarcastically. Hell I
was happy to hear it. I knew we needed help, but something told
me they needed to bring a lot of body bags.
Sheriff Johnson looked at me curiously for a moment. Then asked,
''Do you think I did the right thing?”
I thought about his question for a second then said. ''Hell yes
Sheriff, of course I think you did the right thing. I would have done
the same if I were you.''
''You don't look convinced.'' He said. His eyes full of doubt.
''You have to do something, people are getting killed.'' I told him
reassuringly, then added. ''But what worries me is if we're dealing
with military trained creatures, and you send military after them....
Well I just think they're going to know what to expect.”
''You talk about these sharks as if they're...human.'' The Sheriff said
defensively.
Then he took a long look at me. Sheriff Johnson and I have been
friends a long time. He learned over the years to trust my opinion,
especially when it came to sharks. His eyes softened and he began
to doubt his decision.
“Sheriff'' My tone was softer now. I wanted him to know I was on his
side. ''They're not human. I don't know what they are. But I do know
they're smart. The military created this mess. I just hope they can
clean it up.”
There was a long silence in the room.
