Held back from the printed saga
The Balcony Before Dawn
A scene held back from the printed saga.
Billy did not come to the balcony for the view. He came because the coat had grown heavy in the room, and because the compass on his shoulder had begun to tick like a second heart. Auralis lay below him in a hush of glass and old light. Ships stitched the high dark. On the far rim a dawn was trying to be born, gold as a coin someone had warmed in a palm before spending it.
He said his own name once, quietly, the way you test a floor before you trust it with your weight. The city did not answer. The compass did. It turned, not north, not toward the dawn, but toward the work he had spent years walking around.
Behind him a door opened. He did not look back. Looking back was how the Fourth Shadow entered a life, as a reasonable hesitation, a small permission you never remember granting. He put both hands on the cold stone and watched the light come up, and for the first time since the cave, the light watched him back.
This scene is not in the novels. It lives here.
